On the basis of the specific information needs and requirements of the users community ( Researchers, African water authorities) EO-based water information services are developed, demonstrated, validated. The declared aim of the TIGER initiative is to develop EO services in collaboration with African stakeholders and transfer them to mandated national and trans-boundary water authorities for operations under their leadership. Such a transfer is long-term process involving R&D activities, capacity building and local adaptations of EO services and information systems.
The 10 years of TIGER developments resulted in a solid and validated EO service portfolio including among others:
- Catchment characterisation and base mapping
- Water quality monitoring,
- Soil moisture services,
- Surface water extent (floods, water bodies) and height monitoring,
- Support to ground water management and exploration.
- Hydro(meteo-geo)logic modelling
To support of the African Earth Observation capacity for Water Resource Monitoring, an open-source Water Observation and Information System (WOIS) was developped. |
