TIGER-2 AO Open (deadline 23 May 09 - extended to 29 May 09)

2009-03

TIGER has completed its first implementation period (2005-2007) involving more than 150 African institutions (water authorities, universities, technical centers) through its projects and training activities. The results and achievements of these first years of activity have been recognized at the First African Water week organized in Tunis on 25-29 March 2008 with a direct recommendation:

International initiatives like . TIGER which provide useful tools to the countries to strengthen their capacities for ensuring water security should be encouraged and supported.

As a direct response to this African request, a new implementation period of the TIGER initiative is proposed aiming at supporting African countries to enhance their capacities to better understand, monitor and manage water resources.

A major component of this new phase is devoted to support African scientists to develop the scientific skills and the technical capacity to make the best use of Earth Observation technology to better understand, assess and monitor the status of the water resources in Africa as well as the potential impacts of climate change, hence establishing sound scientific bases for developing effective adaptation or mitigation measures at political level in the continent.

We are pleased to inform you that the Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for the Scientific Component of the TIGER Initiative 2009-2011 has been opened at the address: http://eopi.esa.int/TIGER2. More information and the forms for proposal submission may be found on the above Website. The strict deadline for submissions is May 23rd, 2009.

TIGER partners invite African scientists, technical centres and water authorities to prepare and submit projects proposals to participate in the Scientific Component of the second implementation period of the TIGER initiative: Assessment of Water Resources in Africa under Global Climate Variability: Turning Science into Operations.

With this AO ESA plans to select a maximum of 20 projects which will be integrated into the TIGER Network and will benefit from the TIGER Capacity Building Facility, with free access to EO data, scientific advice, free software, training, research stages, dedicated courses, installation when required and feasible of an ESA Data Dissemination System, support for the participation to TIGER-related workshops, E-learning and support for scientific publication.

TIGER will not provide any additional financial support on top of training and capacity building supporting activities. Therefore, projects shall demonstrate access to sufficient resources to perform the proposed work.
